Introduction to Florida Golf Courses

Hello,
My name is Shane and I love golf. Most importantly is the fact that I love golfing in Florida. There are more golf courses in the state of Florida than any other state in the U.S.A. I have lived in Florida since 1983, and have been playing golf since 1975. I wanted to create this blog with the purpose of having a way to communicate with other golfers who are looking for a course to play on in Florida. I am co-owner of one of the best Florida golfing recourses on the web. http://www.flgolfcourse.com/ is a Florida golf course directory which lists information for over 600 public and semi-private golf courses throughout Florida. I created this site with the golfer in mind, not to have a site full of worthless information and links to non-relevant sites. This blog is intended to bring information to flgolfcourse.com, which will make it more informative for the golfers looking for relevant info. If you have any information to share concerning anything to do with Florida golfing, please post it here. I also receive information from courses concerning discounted rates and any specials that might be going on at the time. I will do my best to post these as they come into the office.
Sincerely,
Shane

  • During summer last year, the old excitement of a road trip became too tempting to overcome. So, one hot, sizzling Friday afternoon in Central Florida I loaded up my car for the weekend and headed south on Highway 19 back to Pinellas County for a day of golfing (where I lived before relocating to Central Florida).

My wanderlust had an overwhelming desire to see the Gulf again, and I had already booked reservations at a resort I had heard much about but never taken the time to visit. This time was different. I was on an adventure. I am known for just taking off on my own and experience places every once in a while.

This time, I was heading toward Adams Mark Carribean Resort, situated directly on Clearwater Beach. From Homosassa Springs I traveled Highway 19 South as far as Tarpon Springs and then turned right on Alternate Highway 19 to take in the "scenic view." This less-traveled, small road meanders its way through the old section of Tarpon Springs, and for those who wish to see and learn about Old Florida, this is the route for you.

Note: Alternate Highway 19 is not for those in a hurry. It is a two-laner and travels through the center of small towns all along the drive. However, if time is not an issue, driving this route is definitely time well spent.

Get set for a dose of beauty as you cross the bridge. After leaving the mainland, you'll get a gorgeous view of the Gulf of Mexico and Clearwater Beach.

After checking in, I was given instructions for the parking garage next to the resort. The parking garage is a three-level with attendants and a handy elevator to take you to your respective floor. My room was on the top - the 14th floor - and included a balcony and a breathtaking view of the bayside of Clearwater Beach.

The Resort is self-contained - you never have to leave except to hit the beach or a golf course! There is a gift shop in the lobby. The resort is proud of its two restaurants - Calico Jack's and Calypso Galley. Calico Jack's has a Florida-style atmosphere and specializes in seafood and steaks. Calypso Galley is an indoor/outdoor area with a perfect view of the Gulf and offers a selection of salads, fresh fruits, sandwiches and the best cheeseburgers I have ever had!

Jack's Place is the place to be for night-time entertainment live. There is a lounge in the lobby as well for those who are seeking a quiet, cozy place to visit and relax. The Tiki Bar area was my favorite place in the resort. I discovered that the resort featured a live band over the weekend and found them to be among the best I have heard locally. The band has played for the resort for a number of years (they play in other areas of the beach as well) and have CDs available.

The Jamtastiks feature Terrel Lovett, Tony "Kitch" Payne, Marvin Lovett, Jeff Davis and Alan Midoro. Their music ranges from some of my all-time favorites - "Lay Down Sally," "Brown-eyed Girl," "Don't Worry, Be Happy," "All Day, All Night, MaryAnn..." to numerous popular pieces by Jimmy Buffet.

The Tiki Bar is for the laid-back and those who enjoy calypso, reggae and popular music with a different beat. The old rule of thumb of "no shirt, no shoes, no service," certainly does not apply here. The outdoor area part of the grill is adjacent to the Tiki Bar as well as the pool area, and you can beat the Florida heat with the ceiling fans overhead that enhance the Gulf breezes. There is a Seafood Buffet available daily from 5-10 p.m. as well.

If I were single, this would be an ideal hangout. It is a perfect place for singles to enjoy and have fun. The place is crowded with couples, singles and families all with one goal in mind - to enjoy the music, the food and drink, and soak up the atmosphere of Florida. It is the kind of place that I halfway expected to see Jimmy Buffet happen to drop by and perform with the band and order one of their "cheeseburgers in paradise," as I like to call them.

The Resort is professionally run. I noticed managers working side by side with employees at every level and a politeness and friendliness by everyone who works there that makes the stay even more pleasurable.

I did venture out onto the street to do a little and discovered "Licks." Much like the name denotes, it is ice cream heaven. It is the place where "you scream, I scream, we all scream for ice cream!" The varieties are seemlingly endless and very delicious.

I enjoyed my sunset walks on the beach and watching the sun come up over the Gulf as I strolled along in the mornings. These walks are inspirational, stimulating and totally relaxing.

Resort Guest Services include mail, room service, laundry and dry cleaning, babysitting, sightseeing excursions and tour planning assistance, the outdoor heated pool, children's wading pool, jacuzzi, parasailing, jetsking, car rental, money exchange and safe deposit.

There are six suites, 182 doubles and 25 king rooms at the Adams Mark Resort. In all, there are a total of 207 rooms. The Resort also offers meeting facilities that feature 4,000 square feet of meeting, banquet and exhibit space which can be divided into four rooms, in addition to six conference suites. The meeting equipment available includes a PA system, podiums, floor and portable microphones, projection screens, portable stages, lecterns with lights, blackboard, easels, corkboards, lobby bulletin boards, padded metal stack chairs, telephones with dedicated trunk lines, individual direction signs and 110/220v power.

Oceanfront wedding receptions are available that "always get wave reviews!" A great way to start your life together in Paradise is the slogan and the resort offers an exquisite catering menu, elegant ballroom and the availability of a Professional Wedding Planner.

Adams Mark Carribean Resort is located at 430 South Gulfview Boulevard, Clearwater Beach, FL 33767. Phone numbers are 813/443-5714 and 1-800-444-ADAM; Fax 813-442--8389; Sabre-4954; Worldspan - AMCL; Apollo - 17994; and Amadeus - CLW-064. Review: Played in a tournament at this golf club the other day. The course was well maintained, but in some areas there was only dead grass and dirt where the rough should have been. The course is narrow and plays shorter than it really is. We left the cart behind and noticed what a distance it was between some of the holes. It was easy getting there and we went off on time. The fee for the round wasn't out of line and we really had fun there. Joe 6/23/2004 8:40:24 AM Review of Chi Chi Rodriguez Golf Club

Description: Bardmoor Golf & Tennis Club offers a first class golf course where you will need long drives, accurate irons and a solid short game to do well on this course. Nice features of this course includes a large difference in yardage from the four sets of tees, and not to mention the beauty of this course. With water on just about every hole and extremely well manicured fairways and greens, this course is a must if you are in the area. Clubs available for rent at $25 plus tax. Acres of water, 7 fountains, 3 bridges, and numerous flower beds. Winter caddie program and bag drop service with club cleaning. 11,000 square foot clubhouse with golf shop, informal grill room. Bardmoor is a spikeless facility. Proper dress required. No personal coolers of food items.

Review: No wonder they played the JC Penny Classic here. Bardmoor is one tough golf course. Right off the bat a dogleg right with water on the right and a bunker on the left. #5 was a great uphill par three except too much club put me in the water behind the green. I really like this golf course, the tee boxes, the fairways and greens. Just plain good. Vince 6/10/2004 9:57:04 AM Review of Bardmoor Golf Course

Proper dress required. No personal coolers of food items. Public Tees times up to 4 days in advance. Members Tee times up to 7 days in advance.

Review: I was at Lansbrook Golf Club the other day and the greens were pretty good and decent fairways. Short and somewhat tight makes for "old man" target golf. Nice course for the high handicapper. I will play Lansbrook Golf Club again Anon 6/14/2004 11:29:38 AM Asst. Pro Steve and Head Pro Tim are cool guys. The course has great rates right now compared to many other courses. It usually plays pretty quick but could use a ranger on the 7th tee to speed things up. All of the par 3s are over water and are challanging. The toughest hole on the course is 5th hole with its tight fairway and small green with hazards. It is a good course and right now the greens seem like they are in good shape. The only thing I dont like about Lansbrook Golf Course is that the driving range sometimes has the mats. But if you want to play a good course for a good price play Lansbrook. Jake 3/20/2004 9:59:14 AM

Green fees are reasonable with a range of $15 - $40 (depending on the season) for 18 holes, including cart. Golf Card holders save 25% with no limitation on play and groups of 16 or more may also receive discounts. Call the Pro Shop for details and and Daily Specials!!!

Review: The Panther Creek course at Spring Lake Golf Resort is a treat for the long hitter. The fairways for the most part are wide open and hard to get into too much trouble off the tee, but the length makes up for that. If you are not close to the fairway on your drive, there will be a long second shot coming up. The Panther Creek course has a par 6 that is 770 yards from the back tees. It is makable in three with nicely placed shots. The hole is straight which makes it an easy hole to score well on. I truly enjoyed the hole, but only scored a par; maybe next time there will be a birdie flying by. Fairways were in great shape, as well as the greens. Nice grille for a snack or lunch, or just a cold drink. One of the nicer courses in Sebring. I will be back to play the Panther Creek course at Spring Lake Resort.

Review: The Spring Lake Golf Resort's Cougar Trail course is a shorter but more narrow course compared to the Panther Run course at Spring Lake Golf Resort. It is important to drive the ball on the fairway to set up the second shot. There are many tree lined fairways, which add to the pressure of making a good drive off the tee. The greens are usually protected by trees or sand to make the second shot as important as the drive. The layout at the Spring Lake Golf Resort's Cougar Trail course is one that will keep a golfer honest when using the driver off the tee. Fairways were in good shape, but the greens were in great shape. Cougar Trail is a course for both beginners and pros alike. The staff was very pleasant and helpful with everything. I will be back to play again next year.

  • Eagles Golf Course / Forest
    16101 9 Eagles Dr
    Tampa, FL 33556
    813.920.6681

Description: Noted golf course architect, PGA Tour professional and NBC-TV commentator Gary Koch and master architect Rick Robbins are responsible for the front nine of The Eagles Forest Course, while noted architect Ron Garl designed the back nine at the Eagles Forest golf course. Accuracy is a premium on this course, with its highly contoured fairways and well placed, meticulous greens. This golf course measures 6,700 yards and features the signature island-green, par-3 sixth hole, which rivals the famous 17th hole at the TPC at Sawgrass in Jacksonville. The third hole of The Eagles Forest course is a "fun" hole. This short par-4 invites eagles and doubles eagles. it is reachable from the tee with a well-placed long drive. however, the player choosing to "go for it" faces a formidable task. Water down the entire right side and a green surrounded by bunkers make a lay-up the far less risky choice. The back nine of The Eagles Forest golf course hosts several holes which are not only challenging but are as beautiful as any holes in golf. The 10th is a reachable par-5 carved from dense forest. This hole challenges the golfer from the tee and also on the approach. The Eagles Forest golf course is also famous for its 13th hole, dubbed "Lake Michigan" because of the large lake guarding the green. A par here is equal to a birdie on most other holes. The 17th hole - known as "the partner's hole" - has bet with rave reviews. Water down the left side from tee to green, woods to the right and a firm, fast fairway create a hole that appears wide open but requires skill and precision to play well. The Eagles Forest Golf Course is a true test of all skills.

Review: Back nine on Eagles Forest Golf Club much nicer than front 9. Sweet layout with varrying doglegs. Able to reach a few 4's in two. will love to play The Eagles Forest Golf Course again.

  • Eagles Golf Course / Lakes
    16101 9 Eagles Dr
    Tampa, FL 33556
    813.920.9239

Description: Eagles Golf Course / Lakes offers an abundance of water which inspired the moniker for this course. Water comes into play on virtually every hole. This 18-hole course measures over 7,100 yards and is more like the traditional Florida course with huge greens and generous driving areas. Both nines of The Lakes Course at The Eagles starts out with unique par-5's that challenge golfers to use their creativity to make a sub-par score. As you play these outstanding layouts, you soon understand why The Eagles has a hard-won reputation for well-conditioned tees, greens and fairways. Four sets of tees offer golfers a wide choice of challenges. When the St. Petersburg Times canvassed several dozen Tampa Bay golf courses to put together a Tampa Bay "Dream 18," two holes from The Eagles were selected.

Review: I played the Eagles Lakes Golf Course today and wish i had played the golf course years earlier. For living in the Bay area since 1990, I can not believe I have never played this golf course before. The fairways were in great shape, but the greens were a bit slower due to the rain. The rates for the Eagles Lakes golf course were in line with the courses of this level. I will be back to play the Eagles Lakes Golf Course very soon. Jay Nioping

  • Highlands Reserve Golf Club
    500 Highlands Reserve Blvd
    Davenport, FL 33837
    877.508.4653

Description: Highlands Reserve Golf Club is a top-tier public Orlando golf course. Year after year, the club ranks not only as a premier Orlando golf course, but also receives national recognition.

Review: Highlands Reserve Golf Club in Davenport is just west of the Disney Resort area. Highlands Reserve a Mike Dasher design that is not your average Orlando course. This mid-priced course hosts water on just 2 holes, the pine tree lined fairways and citrus groves, along fairways that feature elevation changes up to at least 120 feet. Highlands Reserve Golf Club is a links style course which is well maintained course including spacious landing areas and large, mildly undulating putting surfaces. The greens are often two or three tiered, so don't get two excited about that put yet. Highlands Reserve Golf Club will be seeing me again.

  • Northdale Golf and Tennis Club
    4417 Northdale Blvd
    Tampa, FL 33624
    813.962.0428

Description: Northdale remains one of the premier courses for Florida golf packages because of its affordable play, its use of water on 11 of 18 holes, bunkers, rolling undulations and contoured greens that really challenge players. In 1977, Northdale Golf & Tennis Club was founded by the Criterion Corporation. Criterion enlisted Ron Garl previous "Golf Designer of the Year" to design a golf course that would become a premier destination for Florida golf packages. The Tampa, Florida golf course would "sit softly on the land". Land that originally was a dairy farm was transformed by the design of Ron Garl employing his vision "To design and build memorable courses that challenge players to excel and that everyone can enjoy". The course was sold in 1980 to Dave Creighton a National Hockey League star that owned Northdale until 2000, when Crown Golf Properties purchased the facility. During the summer of 2002 the golf course underwent it first renovation since being built. Golf Sculptors of Florida was the contractor for a project that included the complete rebuilding of all greens to USGA specifications, reshaping of every bunker and the resurfacing of over four (4) miles of cart path. The improvements made are certain to delight the large cadre of loyal golfing patrons who have made Northdale their home course for the last 25 years.

Review: The golf course at Northdale Golf & Tennis Club is a "jewel of a design" by Ron Garl. This classic Florida-style layout has only two parallel fairways, which enables you, the golfer, to enjoy the view of the natural terrain. The always well-maintained course winds its way through180 acres of property that features Bushy Creek, a series of small lakes, and unspoiled wooded areas. Located just 15 minutes north of Tampa airport, Northdale is a convenient and friendly choice for golf. Ask about special rates after 3 pm.

Review: The Village Golf Club is a great course for the thinking golfer. Water and trees come into play on most holes. Room to keep a manageable round and score well. The fairways are plush and the greens fast and true. Some "T" boxes need work. Great value at The Village Golf Club.

  • To create a one-of-a-kind golf course like Windswept Dunes Golf Club, designers must work to preserve as much of the natural vegetation and topography as possible. Windswept Dunes Golf Club designer and builder Doug O'Rourke has succeeded on all counts. Featuring miles of spectacular white sand dunes (some as high as 20 feet!), large rolling fairways, artful bunkering and immaculate conditioning, Windswept Dunes GC frames itself in rare, unspoiled beauty.

While the 750 acre setting is breathtaking, what makes Windswept Dunes GC truly remarkable is that there are no crowds, no hustle and bustle at all. Here, off the beaten path, it is easy to be serene; it is natural to be happy.

Windswept Dunes is a spacious 18-hole layout, 7585 yards from the championship tees, but with five additional sets of tees, offers challenge and excitement for golfers of all abilities.

As you begin playing Windswept Dunes, you'll know you're in for something special. Lush green fairways are generally wide and generous off the tee. The sand dunes, often stretching from tee to green, present trouble only for the wildly errant shot. Even then, the dunes provide a welcome alternative to a ball lost in a backyard, swamp or lagoon which is your fate at most other courses. In fact, you'll face only select water at Windswept Dunes.

What the tee shot offers in forgiveness, the approach shot takes away with the need for precision. Bunkers gracefully finger their way around most greens. The greens themselves are large and velvety smooth, demanding a deft touch with the putter.

Each of the dune-lined holes at Windswept Dunes Golf Club has its own unique character, offering one memorable experience after another. There is simply nothing like it - and no better value - in the area. You'll be swept away!

The exceptional layout and course conditioning at Windswept Dunes Golf Club can be attributed to designer Doug O'Rourke's endless attention to detail and direct involvement from day one. He proudly admits, "After all the wonderful courses we've built, I didn't expect to have that Christmas morning excitement that you have when you're a kid! Our family looks forward to sharing this gift of Windswept Dunes with you."

There are short holes demanding accuracy and long holes that require length. Water can be found on eleven holes along with sixty-seven bunkers between the first tee and the eighteenth green. A great round can only be carded at Wedgefield Golf Club if you can successfully survive the punishing final four holes.
